iPhone 17 May Not Have a Thin Design, Apple Postpones Plans to Use Space-Saving RCC Components (Resin-Coated Copper)
According to rumors, Apple would upgrade the PCB materials in its iPhone 16 models in 2024. Initially, it was rumored that Apple would use new resin-coated copper (RCC) components in the iPhone models in order to reduce their size and thickness, Initially reported that the iPhone 16 family would undergo a revolutionary design change this year, but it was later postponed to the iPhone 17, which is expected to be launched officially in 2025,
Now, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple has once again postponed its plans to incorporate RCC components into future iPhone models. Apple’s rumored choice is thought to be due to concerns about stability and durability.
Discard current RCC content:
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo notes in an X (formerly Twitter) post that Apple has once again postponed its intentions to use RCC components in future iPhone models. “The new iPhone 17 in 2025 will not use RCC as the PCB motherboard material due to the inability to meet Apple’s high-quality requirements,Kuo wrote on X.
The Cupertino-based company would benefit from using RCC components to replace the current copper-clad laminate (CCL). Additionally, it is likely to increase storage space and enable the company to include bigger batteries in future iPhone models. Delays in the adoption of RCC technology may be due to concerns about durability and fragility.
At first, it was rumored that Apple would upgrade the PCB materials for its iPhone 16 lineup in 2024, but it was later shifted to the iPhone 17 lineup. Kuo does not disclose whether RCC components will be released with the iPhone 18 in 2026 or the iPhone 19 in 2027. However, Apple has not disclosed any specifics regarding its switch to RCC materials, so these latest claims should be taken with a grain of salt.
